「これは蒸気機関の大きいものですかな？」とか
質問をして逆にアメリカ人を驚かせたらしい。
オランダ経由だと思うけど、結構そういう知識は入ってたみたい。

交渉に当たった役人が「どちらの方からきました」と
聞いたので、「アメリカという国は・・・」と説明しようとしたら、
「いや、そういうことではなくてサンフランシスコからまっすぐ
きたのか、それともニューヨークから喜望峰周りできたのか？
どちらにしても現在工事中のパナマ運河が出来れば楽に
なるでしょうな」と言われて「鎖国して情報がない」と思っていた
