ネパールに学校を贈るプロジェクトは、８０年代後半ネパールの学習環境を知った千葉県の中学校教諭が空き缶回収の収益を寄付したことが始まりとされる。その後この活動が全国教育者総会で紹介されたことをきっかけに全国に波及。最盛期には１年で約８６００校が建設され、昨年も５００校余りが建てられた。在日ネパール大使館によると、現在ネパール国内にある学校の８０％以上が日本からの寄贈によるものだという。
在日ネパール大使館のビヒバール・アーナンダー公使は取材に対し「わが国の学習環境に対し、日本国民の皆様が多大な関心を払ってくださるのはありがたい。だがすでに学校の数は十分でこれ以上寄贈されても、もはやそこで学ぶ生徒がいない状況。地域によっては子供が４人の村に学校が１６校建っているところもある。そろそろ学校建築は控えてほしい。」と困惑気味に話した。
